How does Juvéderm work?
Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable gel that instantly lifts and smooths wrinkles and folds while adding volume in the areas you need it most. HA is a natural sugar compound found in your body that hydrates and promotes healthy skin. As we age, our skin begins to break down HA, which leads to unsightly signs of aging. Once injected, Juvéderm increases volume in precise areas to produce a more vibrant, fuller, and younger look.
What to expect with Juvéderm
During your Juvéderm appointment, a fine needle is used to inject Juvéderm into predetermined areas based on your cosmetic concerns. Juvéderm contains lidocaine, a type of anesthetic, to increase your comfort with these injections. Your consultation and treatment should take less than one hour to complete, and there is minimal downtime required with Juvéderm. Some patients return to their daily activities right after treatment.
Juvéderm Results
After treatment, you will notice an immediate improvement in facial wrinkles and folds and lip enhancement. Most patients only need one treatment to achieve their ideal results, with their new look lasting around nine to 12 months. Although Juvéderm temporarily improves your facial features, touch-up appointments may be recommended to maintain these remarkable results.

The overall cost of treatment depends on the amount of product used. The average number of syringes most patients need to achieve their desired outcome is just 1 or 2. During your consultation visit, your treating injector will assess your skin and listen to your expected results. Dr. Rudyard Smith is a board-certified physician who specializes in internal medicine and has more than four decades of experience treating patients. He received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Howard University where he also earned a medical degree. He then completed an internship and residency at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago before going into private practice in 1979. Dr. Smith is affiliated with hospitals throughout the Greater Chicagoland area, including Franciscan Health Hammond and Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital.
Elaine Cabugason, MD
Dr. Elaine Cabugason is a board-certified physician specializing in internal medicine. She received a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Chicago, IL where she graduated magna cum laude. Dr. Cabugason then earned a medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin before returning to Chicago to complete a residency at Loyola University Medical Center. She is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Steven Smith, MD
Dr. Steven Smith is a board-certified physician specializing in family medicine. He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s degree from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis. Dr. Smith then returned to Chicago, IL to earn a medical degree from Rush Medical College before completing the Cook County Family Medicine Residency Program. He is also affiliated with Advocate Trinity Hospital.
